Art and Design

At Godstone Primary and Nursery School, Kapow is used as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Kapow Primary’s Art and Design scheme of work aims to nurture pupils’ creativity, imagination and visual literacy, encouraging them to think like artists and designers. The intention is for the children to develop the confidence to experiment, express ideas and communicate meaning through visual and tactile media.

The scheme promotes an appreciation of art as a powerful form of human expression, helping the children to understand its role across different cultures, time periods and creative industries. It encourages the children to value originality, take creative risks and reflect critically on their own work and that of others.

Intent - What we want our children to achieve

  • To provide all children with a high-quality, progressive art and design education which will engage and inspire them to develop a love of art and design and their talent as artists beyond their time at Godstone Primary and Nursery School.
  • To raise the profile of art and design at Godstone Primary and Nursery School.
  • To provide all children with a secure understanding of the formal elements of art (line; tone; texture; shape; pattern; colour).
  • To enable children to develop and extend skills using a range of media and materials through drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • To provide all children with the opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talents and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as better their understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists.
  • To provide opportunities to think creatively, develop resilience and grow in both confidence and independence; skills that are essential in all subjects and throughout life.
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
