Science
We recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life. We aim to support children in confidently exploring the world around them through providing them with a broad and balanced and relevant curriculum. We aim to equip pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding and to encourage children to be inquisitive. We will ensure that ‘working scientifically’ skills are built-on and developed throughout the children’s time at the school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently. We will encourage them to continue asking questions and to be curious about the world around them.
Intent
- To have a broad, balanced, relevant a differentiated science curriculum, which adheres to the National Curriculum with clear progression throughout to promote children becoming ambitious learners.
- To have a science curriculum where knowledge is carefully sequenced to build on and embed substantive (the ‘what’ of science for example the facts, concepts and content) and disciplinary (methods, practices and ways of thinking) knowledge thus equipping children with scientific knowledge (the processes and methods used to investigate the world, including questioning, predicting, planning and conducting experiments, processing and analysing data, evaluating results, and communicating findings) required to understand the uses of science, today and in the future.
- Develop and embed scientific enquiry skills that will deepen their scientific knowledge.
- To develop an increasingly confident and appropriate use of vocabulary, scientific terms and language.
- To ensure that all children have access to high-quality learning experiences for science through experiential visits and visitors.
- To enrich each child’s cultural capital through high quality teaching and fostering an interest in and understanding of the world around them.
Implementation
- Lessons are taught following the Developing Experts scheme of work on a weekly basis, ensuring both consistency and progression.
- We teach the science scheme to ensure progressive lessons, which are differentiated appropriately, and appropriate vocabulary that allows the children to make sustained progress and develop their scientific skills.
- To enhance the children’s experiences of science through linking with the wider community and first-hand experience through visitors such as STEMazing.
- Linking to further areas of the curriculum through holding a STEM Day where children can explore science, technology, engineering and maths, considering how they link.
- Enrichment opportunities such as external visits for STEM afternoon for upper key stage two in a secondary school lab for practical lessons and enquiries to engage and inspire children and support with a transition to secondary school.
- Analysing children’s progression across the science curriculum using accurate and well formulated assessment techniques using the school assessment system.
- Children experiences both practical and theory science lessons, ensuring they develop both substantiative and disciplinary knowledge alongside developing skills that they have developed in other subjects such as writing (up a science investigation) or maths (through reading measurements and analysing results from experiments).
- Review and preview opportunities with regards to homework to ensure the children are able to remember more.
Impact
- Providing children with a set of knowledge and skills to embed a lifelong love of learning.
- For all children to make good and sustained progress and attainment in science displayed through clear articulation of children using scientific language confidently and appropriately in lessons and building on their prior knowledge.
- Clear and accurate use of both formative and summative assessment for science recorded in science books (Year 1-6) on the school assessment system.
- Children are reflective and understand the importance of science today and in the future and are conscious of the impact that they can have.
- Enrichment opportunities to engage and inspire all children.
